- Up to 40 million people across the globe eat Australian rice every day.
- Australian rice growers are the most efficient and productive in the world and grow rice varieties ideal for the Australian climate
- The Australian rice industry is the first Australian agricultural industry to initiate biodiversity enhancement and greenhouse gas reduction strategy
- Australian rice is exported to over 60 countries
- The Australian rice industry is the first industry to initiate a project to return water to the environment through the Living Murray initiative.”
We ran into these information when we were surfing the Internet. How amazing they were! We made a decision to do a research about Australian rice industry. How did they do to achieve the champions like that and can Viet Nam apply any something?Indeed, Australia is a leader in water use efficiency and environmental improvement. Australia has a highly developed rice industry because of production strategies and organization.
For production, rice farmers use many different methods such as crop rotation and properly water using plans. Farmers follow strict regulations for the growing of rice such as location, soil types and water availability, a shorter rice growing season, other crops grown in the winter to take advantage of moisture soil. They have been acting in accordance with local land and water management plans to minimize the impact of irrigation on the environment.
Its rice yield is consistently above 10 tonnes/ha. The main reason is that farmers do technical measures such as rotation of rice and cereal crops, mechanization process from cultivation to processing, the rice paddies have almost no pests. The rice industry was the first Australian agricultural industry to initiate a regional biodiversity plan and a greenhouse reduction strategy. As part of the Ricegrowers’ Greenhouse Strategy, the RGA has identified seven main areas where there may be opportunities for growers to achieve multiple greenhouse, environmental and production benefits. These areas are: flood irrigation, nitrogen management, soil management, stubble management, greenhouse sink management, energy efficiency and waste management. These actions not only help to protect the environment but also a positive impact on the quality of agricultural products here.
For organization, Australian rice industry is organized simply but effectively, including three bodies: Rice Marketing Board for the State of New South Wales (RMB), Rice Growers’ Association of Australia (RGA), Rice growers’ Limited (SunRice). A Rice Industry Co - ordination Committee then co-ordinates industry policy.
Not only will farmers be the center of production but also the dominant activities in the sector. They have entire responsibilities and rights. Their government plays an only role as outside observers.
All stages of production, from processing to distribution becomes closed and control is maintained to always stable. The rights and interests of rice producers are guaranteed. Division of labor in the rice industry supply chain at a reasonable level, scientific and effective. Thanks to these production and organization strategies, Australian agriculture has recorded significant effects, although it is not the main development branch. It has ensured national food security and given jobs for local people. Then, it provides rice for export industry and ensures food needs of many countries in the world.
Moreover, the rice industry was the first Australian agricultural industry to initiate a greenhouse reduction strategy.
Chemicals level used is the lowest in the world. The technical measures such as rotation of rice and cereal crops, mechanization process from cultivation to processing, and the rice paddies have almost no pests.
The experience of production and organization of Australian rice industry is really valuable for nations as Viet Nam. The strategic solutions such as water use and land improvement is completely available in Vietnam. However, we need to be flexible and persistent in our implementation upon its own conditions.
